More Beaches

A 10-minute drive from Portil brings you into El Rompido (as featured in our golf section). This is a small fishing port with some wonderful beach-front restaurants. We would recommend spending a leisurely lunch here watching the fishing boats coming and going whilst sampling the fresh catch of the day.

West of El Rompido takes you on the stretch of coastline leading into Portugal. We would recommend a visit to the Spanish beaches of Islantilla, La Antilla and Isla Canela as well as the Portuguse beaches of Praia Verde and Monte Gordo - all within a 30 minute drive of Nuevo Portil. Isla Canela beach is a wide, clean, mostly empty sandy beach that is great for families with children. The water is warm and shallow due to large sandbanks. There are several great beach restaurants, shower facilities and a water sports centre during the high season.

The beach at Islantilla has been awarded the blue flag. A big square with lots of pavement cafes separates Islantilla Beach from La Antilla. Both beaches are wide and sandy with a palm-tree lined promenade from which wooden walkways lead to the beaches. The waves here are generally moderate and again showers and watersports facilities are available.

Praia Verde, known locally as the “Green Beach” from the large pine tree forest bordering the dunes, runs for several miles and is one of the nicest beaches in the Algarve. It is a short drive over the bridge from the Spanish town of Ayamonte. The beach is very safe for families and there is plenty of parking available. From here another beach can be reached at the town of Monte Gordo. Praia de Monte Gordo is the most easterly beach of the Algarve, again safe and perfect for swimming. The beach promenade at Monte Gordo offers a full range of restaurants, bars and cafes as well as ample parking.
